FAQ

1
Do I get my originals back?
If you submitted original prints or transparencies then we return your work a week or two after you have approved your page. All returns of originals are by Special Delivery.
2
Can I submit work to other libraries?
Yes, as we hold no rights over your work or force you to accept a contract there are no restrictions on where you can place your work. However some agencies and libraries see UKL as competition and impose restrictions themselves.
3
How does UKL cover its costs?
UKL is a not for profit organisation and as such doesn't always cover its costs. Charging a membership fee covers our outgoings such as phone and post. Commissions on prints/repro sales and advertising on site helps cover our marketing and promotions.
4
How does UKL sell work?
UKL sells work through customer enquires, as art, and also through picture requests from magazines and design/advertising agencies. In the case of art sales ie prints for decorative use we add 30% commission to the price you normally sell your work for. Repro we take 30% from the rate we have accepted by the end user. In all cases we contact you regarding any sales.
5
What about my copyright and UKL?
At no time does UKL hold any rights whatsoever over contributors work. Your copyright remains entirely your own. Neither do we sell rights to images or prints without contacting you. UKL exists and acts solely as an online gallery featuring your images. You are free to request your images to be removed at any time.
6
Why does UKL do what it does?
UKL exists to promote British landscape photography as collectible fine art. In countries like France and the United States photography is a very much appreciated and collected art medium. Here in the UK photography is seen very much as a poor second cousin to art and UKL tries to correct this attitude through its online gallery, travelling exhibitions and talks to clubs and art venues.
7
How quickly do I get paid for sales?
Like many picture agencies and photo libraries UKL has to get money in before we pay money out. Most libraries/agencies often only pay out twice a year. UKL will pay monies owed but will take at least six months and in some cases longer due to cash flow restrictions. All payments are accompanied by a remittance detailing the sale, the commission taken by UKL, the sale type and sale date.
8
Does UKL promote individual photographers?
Under no circumstances does UKL promote individuals. If approached by a photo magazine for individuals we pass requests on to the requested artist.
9
How quickly can I update my home page?
We understand that you are keen to add new images to your home pages but we try to remind you of your audience. Many viewers like to see images repeatedly and given the number of images on UKL visitors often browse the site for six months or more. Also it takes Google roughly two months to add new pages to its search engine so we usually suggest contributors think about adding new images after six months or so. Even then we give updates a low priority but will make corrections when time permits.
10
My privacy on UKL?
Though UKL does hold a database of contributors address & contact details it is purely internal and only used for UKL contact purposes. There will never be an occasion where we pass your details without trying to contact you first. The only exception will be if a work request comes in for a photographer whom we are unable to contact.

How does the Google ranking work?
Our webmaster worked bloody hard to create really good meta tags and because of the number of sites linking to UKL we now have a very high profile on Google. Unless your name is very common like Smith, Jones or Brown your ranking will be high. Obviously we cannot guarantee anything
